Important People
These images show the lack of leadership from key figures in Tulsa and Oklahoma before, during, and after the riot. On the left is an article from New York Tribune showing the indictment of Police Chief Gustafson after the rioting. On the right is a telegram sent to the Governor of Oklahoma.
Leadership
is what helps something grow or dissolve. Strong leadership or weak leadership
are some of the main factors in shaping a community. J. B. Stradford, O. W. Gurley,
Andrew J. Smitherman, and Edwin P. McCabe all showed strong leadership in the Greenwood,
playing a key part in its development. On the other hand, the white part of
Tulsa lacked leadership.
Sheriff McCullough, Police Chief Gustafson, and Governor Robertson showed lapses in judgment helping the riot occur. The Blacks came to help at the courthouse twice, and the Sheriff turned them away. The Police Chief allowed the riot to get out of control before accepting the governor's assistance. The govern ignored the threats made against the African Americans. |
